Join us at Engineering Kiosk Alps, a dynamic tech meetup happening in the heart of the Alps, in Innsbruck! This event brings together tech enthusiasts, engineers, and professionals from various fields to explore the intersection of engineering culture, open source, people and technology.
📅 Date April 16, 2026 - open doors at 18:30 (talks start ~30min later)
Join the next meetup and listen to the following talks. All talks and the meetup are in English.
This talk presents a real-world smart home architecture that combines a robust KNX installation with a flexible, self-hosted Home Assistant setup to create a fully integrated and energy-aware home. Instead of relying on proprietary ecosystems, the system uses open protocols and DIY integrations to connect diverse components—including a photovoltaic inverter, smart meters, and an electric vehicle. By incorporating dynamic electricity pricing from EPEX SPOT, the home can automatically optimize when and how energy is consumed. The talk focuses on technical, hands-on aspects: integrating serial devices via low-cost gateways, bridging KNX with Home Assistant, extracting data from legacy meters using AI-based image recognition, and designing automations that combine real-time data with forecasts. Attendees will gain practical insights into building a modular, vendor-independent smart home system that not only automates tasks, but actively manages energy usage based on price signals, solar production, and demand.
Johannes Sappl is a mathematician and machine learning engineer. He earned both his BSc and MSc in Technische Mathematik from the University of Innsbruck. He is currently pursuing a PhD at the Institute for Environmental Engineering, where his research focuses on the intersection of machine learning and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Alongside his academic work, Johannes is employed at Data Lab Hell, where he develops computer vision and automation solutions for a laboratory within a hard metal manufacturing environment.
AI opens the possibility for more creativity for humans, but in a system based on power-over structures it will probably just keep demanding more and more productivity. How can we work on the structure and culture of our organisation to make it more human-centered? In this interactive talk you will understand what are some of the cornerstones (like leadership, roles, decision-making and other elements) of organising so that employees (also of tech companies) can gain back agency and work on their personal missions within the organisations’ greater purpose.
Alícia is a designer and facilitator of distributed leadership, and self-organisation. Since 2014, she has been a catalyst for several social innovation organisations, from social start-ups, NGOs, to a womens network, to social movements, including Ouishare. She is a TEDx speaker, has co-authored research on these topics and is currently undertaking a PhD with the Tallinn University of Technology and through the P2P lab. Her work is focused on bridging research and practice about alternative ways of organising, and about supporting the creation and sustaining of postgrowth initiatives grounded in political economy research. In her practice, she works with the power that emerges in groups and the growth that is enabled through that for individuals. She is a practitioner of Social Presencing Theatre and incorporates theatre principles and practices in her work.
